The topics which my clients want to discuss when they come to me usually have a common goal. Lately, apart from other things, it´s been a change of job. But during a discussion focused on solutions they realize it´s not the job they need to change.
You might be used to it by now – I won´t analyze here why it is like that. Why, every time something in our lives doesn´t work, we blame our job. If you are not familiar with this, no need to read any further. It would be a waste of time for you. But if you have a job that you really really need to change, it may look like this as well:
You are successful, smart, appreciated. Not necessarily liked by colleagues. That´s probably the reason why you´ve achieved so much – you think. You only focus on your work now. It is, after all, your whole life. Other possible interests feel awkwardly strange. Or they could be a waste of time.
You´re among the first in the office – because, unlike the others, you are really busy. You don´t find it strange that you are usually the last in the office as well. Well, you don´t know what other things, outside work, you could possibly enjoy.
You´ve ignored everybody and nobody calls you anymore. Or they just don´t like how you go on about the same thing – your job. At least at work somebody is paying attention to you, or – they have to, frankly.
Your job is your life, a safe hiding place before the world „out there“ where nobody is waiting for you (a dog, a parrot and a cat don´t count). Business clothes, a suit, colleagues, meetings, chasing results and deadlines, a chip-card, an ID card string around the neck – that gives you this fantastic feeling of security in your life…
And, all of a sudden, it´s here! You´ve realized it cannot go on like this. That you don´t want to live like that anymore.
Do you still think you need to change your job? That if you start a new job, everything will be different? And what if it is you who needs to change? How about changing your work habits, giving back some time to yourself, to your loved ones. How about trying to discover what else might be fun for you, a reason for you to stop blaming your job? A reason for you to leave your job earlier. How about changing your thinking, your priorities?
You don´t need to take a risk straightaway. After all, the things that bother you in your current job would probably start bothering you soon in your new, better job. Don´t you think?

Real problems and real solutions are usually hidden somewhere else. And that´s how it´s likely to be with your job as well. What if you only need to repair what is really broken? That´s one of the things I focus on during my discussions about solutions.
